“If I could award 10 stars I would do so. Francisco is knowledgeable. Well versed in the history of Lisbon and Portugal. Knows the city like the back of his hand. But beyond that was his kindness. On our tour of Sintra I ran into a pick pocket. Lost money, credit and bank cards. Even hearing aid batteries. Francisco jumped into action. Found an atm to replenish our cash. Went in a search of batteries. No luck there. Dropped us at our hotel. On his way home made another try at finding batteries.Success. Returned to our hotel on his own time after hours and dropped them off. Above and beyond the call of duty. A great guide and even better person.”

Our second tour with Francisco was unforgettable! He drove us from Lisbon to Porto with stops in the charming town of Óbidos, where he treated me to a delicious ginjinha drink, and in Nazaré, where he shared personal childhood memories. We then continued on to Coimbra, where we explored Portugal’s oldest university and its beautiful surroundings. The final leg took us to Porto, where we visited the stunning Lello Library. Francisco’s expertise and warmth made the journey feel special. The private sedan, equipped with wi-fi, leather seats, and air conditioning, ensured a comfortable and luxurious experience. Our third day trip with Francisco was fantastic! He picked us up in Évora and drove us to Setúbal, where we explored the vibrant market and the city’s castle. Afterward, we enjoyed a delicious lunch in Arrábida and visited a local winery, where he treated us to a lovely wine tasting. The day ended with a visit to the impressive Christ statue overlooking Lisbon from the Tagus River. Francisco took amazing photos of us, capturing a special moment with Lisbon as the backdrop. His knowledge and attention to detail made the trip unforgettable. Comfortable transport and a relaxed pace ensured a perfect day! Punctual, personable, great sense of humor. Happy to accommodate on the schedule, dining preferences or your partners wish to browse souvenir shops. We have a tendency to walk through museum’s, historical sites, etc, just reading the placards with very little understanding of what we were seeing. Touring with Francisco was a revelation. “Francisco is a wonderful tour guide! He took us on a full-day tour to the areas south of Lisbon. We are a family group of five, ages 16-53, and Francisco engaged well with everyone. The tour that he designed for us hit a wide range of interesting and fascinating places in the countryside, including a beach visit, a visit to a tile factory, and a visit to a winery. The best part of the day however was lunch, where Francisco joined us at a local seafood restaurant that had amazing food, and we (and our children) learned so much from him about Portugal and its history and culture. “Francisco is a wonderful and very professional guide. We toured with him for 3 days and he educated us with in depth history on all of the sites (Lisbon, Evora, Tomar). Greater value comes in the form of the cultural education we had while spending time driving and eating lunch (which he took us to local favorites as well as obligatory places such as the original bakery for Pastéis de Nata). We asked so many random questions about Portugal in general which he happily answered. We came away with not just pictures, but a greater understanding of a country I woefully knew too little about. He was flexible with us as we didn’t know 10/13 had special significance for one of our stops – Fatima. “I thought I knew a fair bit about the Knights Templar. Turns out, not so much. That’s where Francisco really shined. On the drive out to Tomar — a quaint village northeast of Lisbon — he filled in all the gaps, especially the Templar ties to the birth of Portugal as a nation. His driving? Impeccable. Not once did we “fear for our lives” (a refreshing change, considering the rally-car experience we had with another company the very next day in Sintra). His knowledge of Portuguese history, and the role Tomar played in it, was stellar. We visited the Convent of Christ, a cathedral the Templars built – Church of Santa Maria do Olival, along with a river fort – Castelo de Almourol – they constructed (the river fort being a fabulous Geocache location to boot). Francisco even introduced us to a few authentic Portuguese dishes we never would have tried on our own. And, by pure luck, we shared the road with hundreds of motorcyclists on their annual pilgrimage to Fátima for the “Blessing of the Helmets.” A surreal, unforgettable moment. From now on, we’ll be looking for With Locals tours first. Our day with Francisco set the bar high – and after the subpar “Get Your Supposed Guide” tour, the choice feels like a no-brainer. (If only we’d booked Francisco for both days, we’d have saved ourselves some awkward moments, heart racing, white-knuckle seat-gripping and a few gray hairs.)”
